It sure does bring back memories doesn't it?

When I first joined Hornbillcity, I quickly learnt that Toastmasters is not just about opening and closing your mouth. I met - and am still continuing to meet - fantastic people from myriad backgrounds. The friendship, encouragement and camaraderie of the members is a super bonus.
We are talking about a large pool of diverse knowledge, expertise and experience. I heard and learnt from speeches about the tax system, how to make a salad sauce and why a deaf frog is able to make his way to the top of the KL tower.

What a great learning environment it is for my Toastmasters journey (and hopefully for you as well)! Not least, I met and made many many wonderful friends along the way.

Still nervous about joining Toastmasters?

Why not give us a try? The friendly and 'informal' atmosphere at our training meetings will get you relaxed in no time.

Christmas Training Meeting

Food, fun and laughter. You couldn't ask for a better combination. The training meeting started with FOOD. Lots of food.

Followed by 2 speeches - Derbe and Avril. Both spoke from the Story-telling manual and both stories were related to the Christmas theme.

Next came the Table-topics session, where very unusual characters surfaced - Wise men riding on turbo-powered camels, talking turkeys and a snowman...and those were the more 'normal' ones.

Role-playing with Lawrence to demonstrate how we should handle and diffuse criticisms. Lawrence was a disgruntled employee that felt Siew Yan has been bullying and targetting him on purpose.

A scarecrow,an Egyption Mummy and James Bond. What do they have in common?

They all came for the Toastmasters meeting on 28.10.2008. I kid you not.

With such interesting characters, the meeting proved to be very lively. The role players that evening: -

People often ask, “What do you do during a Toastmasters meeting?”

Well, a typical meeting format is like the Guest Night/training meeting held on 14.10.2008: -

1. Sergeant-at-arms (SAA) Violeta signals for the meeting to start.

2. President Dunstan calls the meeting to order – Toasts, Opening remarks, introduces guests and the Toastmaster of the Evening (TOE)

· Li Yen: If you can only choose 1 colour, what colour would you choose and why?
· Shirlina: You won a free holiday. Where would you go and why?
· Chui Song: What is your favourite animal?

· Chee Ming: If you can travel back in time, which period would you visit?

8. Table topics evaluation

9. General evaluation – The general evaluator calls for reports from the role players such as the grammarian and gives his/her assessment of the meeting in general.

10. TOE wraps up the meeting and hands back to the President.

Evaluate to motivate

A man walked up to a newly crowned dart champion and said, in full hearing of everyone in the pub, “I bet I can beat you in the game of dart”. The Champion was taken aback by the audacity of the claim and the crowd hushed into silence in amazement

“You only need to give me a handicap. As soon as you throw the dart I will blindfold you and will only let you see again when the dart had been removed. We each will have three darts.”

Flushed from his recent victory the Champion said “You are on!” The room was abuzzed with pundits laying hasty bets.

With his first dart the Champion aimed for the triple 20. As soon as the dart left his hand the challenger blindfolded him and thus he was unable to see if his aim was true. Then he was given the second dart and was subjected to the same blindfold treatment. Not knowing what his first score was the Champion was confused. By the third dart he had lost total confidence and shot way out of the dart board. The challenger went on to make a modest score and won the bet.

The fact is that in all our endeavours we need the guidance of feedback to give us the necessary information to make adjustment for improvement.

However, evaluations which are given at large tend to focus predominantly on the areas of weakness, and also can be too comprehensive. Consequently most people fear evaluations and criticism, even constructive ones. It is a case of too much analysis giving paralysis. Consider the case of a novice tennis player being harangued by an amateur coach. “Racket back, turn your shoulder, eyes on the ball, bend your knee, lock you wrist, etc.” That is way too much information and the poor player would just freeze.

Toastmasters is an educational organisation for self development through its primary activity -- public speaking. The process of giving feedback to the speaker in Toastmasters is called Evaluation. The Toastmasters Evaluation places strong emphasis on highlighting the strong points of the performer while the negative aspects are given sparingly.

The recognition of the good points of the speaker makes sense because many a times the speaker tends to fail to recognize his own strengths. And when being made aware of the fact the speaker will have the confidence to build on them for his future tasks.

When being sparing in pointing out the areas that need improvement the evaluator is practicing “progressive teaching”. In Toastmasters the members follow a course in public speaking training, starting a series of 10 speeches in the Basic Manual and progressing through scores of specialized speeches in the Advanced Manuals. Therefore it is not necessary (and indeed it would be counter productive) to point out each and every shortcoming of the speaker in one go. The poor fellow may be so overwhelmed that he would just stop trying.

The principle belief of Toastmasters is that people “learn by doing” Thus a key objective of a Toastmasters Evaluation is to motivate. So the Evaluation will have a liberal dose of positive comments, and the negative parts when given, are couched in such encouraging language that the receiver will motivated to try again as soon as possible. As the saying goes, “practice makes perfect”.

The mission of Hornbill City Toastmasters club is to provide a mutually supportive and positive learning environment in which every member has the opportunity to develop communication and leadership skills, which in turn foster self-confidence and personal growth. Each training meeting usually features an impromptu speaking session, prepared speeches and insightful evaluation of each speaker.

Members of the public are more than welcomed to join as guests. Entrance fee is RM10 (inclusive of a simple supper). Do come and join us!

Glossophobia

Glossophobia: The fear of public speaking or speech anxiety

The word glossophobia comes from Greek. Glosso = tongue and phobos = fear.

It is believed to be the single most common phobia and it has even been ranked above the fear of death. Jerry Seinfeld once said "The average person at a funeral would rather be in the casket than doing the eulogy."

Tired of being scared? Tired of being limited by this fear? Tired of being speechless in front of a crowd?

Believe it or not, this fear can be controlled and even mastered. Toastmasters the world over are learning this every day.

Rebecca introduced us to 3 efficiency toilet seat schemes and even presented a statistic model based on 1 man + 1 woman + 1 toilet + 1 million visits to the toilet. She concluded her speech by urging us to "Think with our heart" the next time we use the toilet.

Lim Hui Sing (ABC Toastmasters Club) with her speech "Factors affecting job satisfaction". Did you know that the 3 highest factors are (1) Work standards, (2) Fair rewards and (3) Work Related stress? Hui Sing shared with us the findings of a survey from a local Kuching Hardware Company. The name of the Company was of course with-held : )

The training meeting on 8.7.2008 was the 1st for the new fiscal year. It was also the 1st in many other ways.

It was the 1st time we conducted the club business before the training meeting.

1st time Dunstan served as the President of Hornbill City Toastmasters Club.

And... the 1st time we used a one-of-a-kind hand-written meeting programme.

Next, ATMB Derbe delivered her ACS5 - The Play, entitled "Fart Zen" by D.M. Borcaz Larson. The play is about the new age stress relief therapy - Fart to release your inner tensions.

Hornbill City Toastmasters Club is a club within District 51 of Toastmasters International. Founded in 1924 in California, Toastmasters International is now the premier organisation for developing communication and leadership skills. There are over 8,000 Toastmasters clubs worldwide.

The mission of Hornbill City Toastmasters club is to provide a mutually supportive and positive learning environment in which every member has the opportunity to develop communication and leadership skills, which in turn foster self-confidence and personal growth. The club is vibrant and active in communication and leadership activities.

Our meetings feature impromptu speaking, prepared speeches and insightful evaluation of each speaker.

How do I join?
Come to a meeting as a guest. At the end of the meeting ask the Vice President of Membership for an application form.

How many times can I be a guest before I have to join?
You may join straight away or be a guest until you are ready to be a member. The Sergeant-at-Arms and the other members will welcome you. Entrance is RM12 per meeting for guests and members alike. This goes towards meeting expenses.

How much does it cost to join as a member?
If you want to join, it's RM120 for 6 months, plus RM80 joining fee which covers your membership pack with speech manuals, etc. All members receive "The Toastmaster" magazine from Toastmasters International each month.

New members may join at any time during the year and the fees are pro-rated. Further information and an application packet may be obtained from the President or Vice President of Membership at any of the club meetings.

When can I start making speeches?
As soon as you are a club member, you can start booking for speeches and other roles such as grammarian, timer, ah counter etc. You can book by emailing / speaking personally to the Vice-President Education.

What if I need help with my first speech?
Each new member is assigned a mentor to personally advise them for as long as they need it.

Can Toastmasters help me to become a professional speaker?
Toastmasters Clubs provides a conducive environment for members who want to improve their communication skills. Participating as a speaker or role player at the meetings is a great way to train and practice since the Toastmasters manuals include easy to follow instructions on how to achieve the goals of each assignment.

Can I join even though I am not a good speaker?
Hornbill City Toastmasters Club is a place for everyone to develop his/her speaking skills. We are here to support each other, give feedback and have a good time.

How many people attend a meeting?
The meeting sizes vary from one to another. It is between 10 to 30 people. On average we get about 15 people attending.

What is the club atmosphere like?
It is a friendly, relaxed and supportive environment.

Is Hornbill City Toastmasters Club open to anyone?
Members of Hornbill City Toastmasters Club come from diverse backgrounds and professions. We have insurance agents, architects, engineers, teachers, lecturers, entrepreneurs, managers, school principals, accountants, professional speakers and trainers, financial planners, computer professionals, to name a few.

How does Hornbill City Toastmasters Club help me to develop my skills?
Hornbill City Toastmasters Club offers members many opportunities to develop their speaking skills. Each meeting, every member will have a chance to speak in front of people, either with impromptu or scheduled speeches. Members can also develop their leadership skills by serving as club officers.

Can I give a speech without being a Hornbill City Toastmasters Club member?
Priority goes to Hornbill City Toastmasters Club members but we're also open to Toastmasters of other clubs.
